NEXI signs MOU with ALBRAS – Alumínio Brasileiro S.A. to strengthen collaboration for supply chain resilience in the low-carbon aluminum
Nippon Export and Investment Insurance
Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI, Chairman and CEO: Atsuo Kuroda) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ALBRAS – Alumínio Brasileiro S.A. (ALBRAS), Nippon Amazon Aluminium Co., Ltd.(NAAC), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), and MUFG Bank, Ltd. (MUFG).
The MOU was announced at the Japan-Brazil Economic Forum held in Tokyo, on March 26th, 2025, in the presence of H.E. Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, and H.E. Mr. Shigeru Ishiba, Prime Minister of Japan. Representatives of ALBRAS, NAAC, JBIC, MUFG, and Mr. Atsuo Kuroda, Chairman and CEO of NEXI, were present for the announcement.
ALBRAS, based on the state of Pará in Brazil, produces low-carbon aluminum using hydropower and renewable energy sources. Through NAAC, which holds a 49% stake in ALBRAS, a portion of this low-carbon aluminum is supplied to Japan.
The MOU is intended to promote information exchange among the parties, recognizing the strategic importance of low-carbon aluminum for Japan in enhancing supply chain resilience and achieving decarbonization. Furthermore, the MOU seeks to ensure the long-term and stable supply of low-carbon aluminum from ALBRAS to Japan, including exploring the possibility of financial support for ALBRAS’potential funding needs.
NEXI, as a governmental financial institution of Japan, will actively support efforts that contribute to securing a steady supply of resources and energy to Japan, and the efforts by Japanese companies to achieve carbon neutrality.
