The Berne Union elected Mr. Yuichiro Akita, NEXI as next BU President

Mr. Yuichiro Akita, General Manager, International and Strategic Policy of Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI; Chairman and CEO: Atsuo Kuroda) was elected to be the President of Berne Union (BU: International Union of Credit & Investment Insurers) in Hamburg, Germany on 16th October 2024.

In the history of Berne Union which celebrates the 90th anniversary this year, it is the second time to be the president from NEXI after the election of Mr. Konno, then Chairman and CEO in 2007.

The new President, Mr. Akita took over the position as the successor of Ms. Maëlia Dufour (France: Bpifrance Assurance Export). And Mr. Rafael Docavo-Malvezzi (United Kingdom: AXA XL) was elected to be the Vice President of Berne Union.

The new President, Mr. Akita proposed the vision statement "BU STRIDE: Sustainability Through Resilience, Innovation and Diversity for Empowerment."

Mr. Akita said "STRIDE embodies our commitment to advancing sustainability, resilience, innovation, diversity, and empowerment. It represents the BU’s forward momentum—taking bold, decisive steps toward a future of lasting impact and transformation. Working with the members as well as strengthening the relationship with external stakeholders, BU contributes to solve global and social issues such as SDGs, climate change and energy transition."

(Reference) the overview of Berne Union
Berne Union is the international institution which was established in 1934 and participate Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) in various countries, and it is the place to communicate the common issues about the trade and investment insurance.
This is called “Berne Union” because the meeting to establish was held in Berne, Switzerland. The current member as of October 2024 is 84 institutions, including the ECAs in various countries, private export insurance companies and multilateral institutions.
The whole amount of new business of short term, middle and long term and political risk insurance was approximately USD 3.0tri (JPY 423tri) in 2023.
In the case of Japan, Export Insurance Division, Ministry of Economic Trade and Industry (EID/METI) at that time in May 1970 and NEXI has taken over the post since 2001.
