October 29, 2021

Nippon Export and Investment Insurance

The International Union of Credit and Investment Insurers, known as the Berne Union (BU)1, held its Annual General Meeting 2021 from October 11 to 14 in Budapest, Hungary. It was attended by approximately 160 people from 52 organizations around the world. In the Export Credit Agency (ECA) Committee, Short Term (ST) Committee, and Medium/Long Term (MLT) Committee, the participants shared their business trend of the first half of 2021, as well as exchanged opinions and shared information regarding the themes of interest to member organizations.

An overall trend in the first half of 2021, in terms of new commitments underwritten by the entire member organizations, is that the ST insurance sector increased year-on-year and is recovering to pre-pandemic levels partly due to reducing claims paid for short-term transactions. On the other hand, the MLT insurance sector decreased year-on-year, including in investment insurance and other cross-border support. With claims paid in the MLT insurance being on the rise, it is expected to take some time for the new business to return to pre-pandemic levels.

At this general meeting, Yuichiro Akita, General Manager of the Planning and Policy Department at NEXI2, was elected as the Vice Chair of the ECA Committee. He will be the second BU elected official from NEXI, following the then Chairman Hidehiro Konno who served as the Chair of the BU from 2007 to 2009.
