Nippon Export and Investment Insurance

Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI, Chairman and CEO: Atsuo Kuroda) has decided to provide Overseas Investment Insurance (equity investment, etc.) for investments made by Mitsubishi Corporation (“MC”), Narita International Airport Corporation (“NAA”), Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. (“JAT”), and JALUX Inc. (“JALUX”) to an international airport operation project (“the Project”) conducted by MC, NAA, JAT, and JALUX in Mongolia jointly with its government.

The Project will be managing the New Ulaanbaatar International Airport (official name: Chinggis Khaan International Airport; “the New Airport”) for a period of fifteen years via New Ulaanbaatar International Airport LLC, a joint venture company established by the four Japanese companies, MC, NAA, JAT, and JALUX, and the government of Mongolia.

Mongolia is foreseeing a mid-long term growth predominantly in its capital of Ulaanbaatar which is the political, economic and commercial core of the country. With such anticipation, the Mongolian government considers the New Airport to be an extremely important infrastructure and the hub for passenger and cargo transportation in Northeast Asia that is expected to contribute to Mongolia’s development particularly in the tourism and distribution industry.

The New Airport will be operated leveraging the expertise and knowledge of the four companies with MC having numerous experiences in infrastructure projects including airport construction and management both domestic and abroad; NAA and JAT running the two major airports in Japan, Narita International Airport and the passenger terminal buildings at Haneda Airport respectively; and JALUX engaging in airport retail businesses both in and out of Japan, as well as managing airports overseas. In line with the Infrastructure System Overseas Promotion Strategy 2025 propelled by the Japanese government, the New Airport will seek to offer beneficial airport services while ensuring safety as its top priority.

This is the first project under the assistance of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in which NAA will be operating an airport located outside of Japan. The New Airport represents a new symbol of the bilateral cooperation between Japan and Mongolia portrayed by an integrated assistance that the Japanese government has been extending, such as funding by ODA (Official Development Assistance) provided via Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of the New Airport, and facilitation of investments by Japanese businesses to the Project through NEXI’s Overseas Investment Insurance.

As a governmental financial institution of Japan, NEXI will continue to proactively promote global expansion of Japanese companies and businesses.
