Nippon Export and Investment Insurance
Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI; Chairman and CEO: Atsuo Kuroda) has decided to provide insurance for a loan arranged by Sumitomo Mitui Banking Corporation（SMBC） to AMAGGI EXPORTAÇÃO E IMPORTAÇÃO LTDA (Amaggi), a Brazilian agribusiness company. The loans will be used for the long-term working capital of Amaggi.
Amaggi is Brazil’s major producer and distributor of soybeans and corns that are important grains for Japan in terms of food security.
As NEXI has provided insurance for a loan to enhance agriculture business development of Amaggi in 2014, Amaggi has requested again NEXI to underwrite a loan for the long-term working capital.
Under the loan agreement between Amaggi, SMBC and BNP Paribas, Amaggi must export a certain amount of grain to Japan during the agreement period, and make its best effort to export to Japan even in emergency situations.
In January 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries issued “Basic Plan for Foods Security (revised version in 2021),” which indicates that Japanese government plan to create and maintain the stable trading relationship with major food exporters, so that impact on foods import can be minimized in the state of emergency in terms of securing food supply. The underwriting of this loan insurance embodies the strategy in the form of contributing to Japan’s food supply security.
